I would say because he is the joker(sounds trivial right?)..
I dunno why i like this peculiar character....the joker has always like "fascinated"(i dunno if its the right word...inspiration is a contender)me...fascinated because i can never think the way he thinks...
I used to watch the animated series of superhero stories as a kid...superman, batman and spidey were among them(not to forget x men and justice league)...but i was most attracted to the batman series..
True the joker depicted in all versions of batman greatly differed from that of heath ledger's..but that doesnt take any credit away from the initial premise of the character..the basic logic of the character is the excellent absense of logic in the charater's essence..
the origin of the joker is supposed to be "unknown"...none of the readers/authors know the actual origin of the character...the most popular origin is that one night when the joker had assisted robbers to rob his chemical factory to save his pregnant wife, he had fallen into a tank of chemicals(pushed in a fight against batman)and thus got his face bleeched due to the chemicals...and thus became insane...
But i dont think this origin really makes sense...a person becoming insane just because he had a fall and got his face bleeched???became insane enough to become the nemesis of the greatest saviour of Gotham city???(u agree with me right??)

then again in nolan's case..he completely nullified the impact of the joker's origin by completely ignoring it(even when he is captured in jail..the police arent able to ascertain anything about his origin, they dont even find his name!!)...but this liberty...this freedom granted by ignoring one basic premise created a character much more devastating than what people would have expected..the "why so serious" dialogues and the contradicting stories he gives about his scars are proof enough on how abnormally crazy the character had been portrayed..and since the origin of the character had been ignored..u can hear mentions about the joker's face being painted rather than bleached...

If you did find a lot of "nolan"-ish joker..its because of the impact that particular character has had on me...that when i think of the joker i am unable to really think beyond this character(i hope u dont think something is "wrong" with me)
Coming back to why i am fascinated by the joker...one simple example is the joker's philosophy about anarchy and chaos and stuff...it kinda contradicts with his own methods...like he does all the planning to perfection and executes them with elan...contradicting...but job-fullfilling..

If i had ever thinked about a story with a character doing crazy odd things...i wouldnt have come anywhere close to the joker...thats y the character fascinates me so much...the character also inspires the writer(who writes the methodologies of the character) to think real differently...
the ultimate reason i would put the joker in the position i hold the character is in the fact that i can never think like the character thinks..plan like he does...executes as he does...and the secondary reason would be standing up against someone so undefeatable...i have struggled all my life to do that...i havent been the undefeatable..nor have i stood against one such...
so hail the joker..hail the nemesis...hail the anarchy..
If this article was a total yawn and if it was so boring...I am sorry to have wasted your time...I tried to give my ode to the joker...but my mere thought of him doesnt translate into words...
If u did find the article to be some what a review of dark knight...i cant help it...so much is the impact..
